In the early 1970s, an underground station, Piccadilly Low Level, was proposed as part of the Picc-Vic tunnel project. [23] This scheme proposed creating a direct rail link between Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria, by building a tunnel and several underground stations under Manchester city centre.
Piccadilly Gardens, a green space in the city (view towards Market Street) The city centre has variously been defined as those parts of the city within the Manchester Inner Ring Road, [24] or else the entire area within Manchester's Inner Ring Road, thereby encompassing a part of the administratively separate City of Salford, [25] and an area of Oxford Road to the south. Most services run to or through one of Manchester city centre's major stations, Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly. The network is effectively divided into two operating halves based on these stations, [2] although the opening of a connecting line in 1988 improved operational flexibility by joining the north and south halves. The Bury Line is a light rail/tram line on the Manchester Metrolink in Greater Manchester.It runs from Manchester Victoria station to Bury Interchange in the north. The entire line runs along a converted heavy rail line, and was reopened with the Altrincham Line, another Metrolink line converted from heavy rail, as part of Phase 1 of the Metrolink's expansion.

On 15 September 1830, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened and services terminated at the station. Part of the station frontage remains, as does the goods warehouse.
The corridor forms the eastern end of the southerly Liverpool–Manchester line. The route is recognised as a significant bottleneck, magnified further by the opening of the Ordsall Chord in 2017 and timetable change in May 2018 which increased the number of services through Manchester city centre from 12 to 15 trains per hour.
