Muhammadiyah University Makassar was declared a private college registered on October 1, 1965. In its early establishment, Muhammadiyah University Makassar encouraged two schools of the teacher-and Indonesian arts department, the teacher-and education for general education (GE), and social education (SE) led by the director Dr H. Sudan.

Established in 1975, it is located on the Erdemli Campus of Middle East Technical University in Erdemli, Mersin. The institute's campus includes specialized laboratories, administrative buildings, computing and remote sensing resources, a library, an atmospheric tower, as well as facilities for housing staff and students.
Prof. Dr. Kahar Muzakkir began throwing ideas about the need the establishment of University of Muhammadiyah. When the Central Leadership Muhammadiyah Teaching Council inaugurated the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Yogyakarta on November 18, 1960, its founding charter explicitly included it as part of the Guidance and Counseling, University of Muhammadiyah.
Muhammadiyah follows the Athari school of Sunni Islam, accepting only taking naqli (scripturalist) and rejecting all aqli (rationalist) tendencies.It emphasizes the authority of the Qur'an and the Hadiths as supreme Islamic law that serves as the legitimate basis of the interpretation of religious belief and practices.
Finally, in 1992, it is reorganized as Faculty of Maritime and tied to the Istanbul Technical University.
