Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia. [1] West Virginia was admitted as a separate state of the United States on June 20, 1863. [2]
Pocahontas County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,869. [2] Its county seat is Marlinton. [3] The county was established in 1821. It is named after the daughter of the Powhatan chief of the Native Americans in the United States who came from Jamestown, Virginia.

Mill Point is an unincorporated community in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, United States. Mill Point is at the junction of U.S. Route 219 and state routes 39 and 55, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Hillsboro. Mill Point was so named on account of there being several mills near the original town site. [2]
