Winthrop House maintains an affiliation with Davenport College at Yale University. The house's name honors two notable men who shared the name "John Winthrop"—the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as well as his descendant, an 18th-century astronomer who was both a Harvard professor and president of the university.
Winthrop University was founded In 1886, when the Peabody Education Board of Massachusetts, headed by Robert Charles Winthrop, provided $1,500 to form the Winthrop Training School for white women teachers. That year the school opened its doors to twenty-one students in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Withers Building, also known as the Winthrop Training School or W.T.S., is an historic building complex located at 611 Myrtle Drive on the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. [2] [3] The complex consists of three parts: the old Presbyterian High School, the Main Classroom - Office Building and the new Gymnasium.
Deane Winthrop (1623–1704) was the sixth son of the second colonial governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop. The oldest part of the house was built about 1675 with an addition made in 1696. It is currently owned by the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association and is open to visitors by appointment.
