Brothers Ronald, Marvin, and Carvin made two albums in 1974 without Michael, and in 1975 with Michael under the name "The Testimonial Singers".. Their big break was their first record Introducing The Winans, produced in 1981 by Andrae Crouch, two years after he discovered them and invited them to tour with him.

Winans Phase 2 was formed in 1998 and recorded on Myrrh Records. It consists of Marvin Winans Jr., Carvin Winans Jr., Michael Winans Jr., and Juan Winans, the son of Carvin Sr.. Marvin Jr. started a production company called M2 Entertainment and produced songs for his mother Vickie Winans' album Woman To Woman.
Winans was formerly married to gospel singer Viviane "Vickie" Winans, née Bowman, for 16 years, until their divorce in 1995. His sons, Marvin Jr. (Coconut), Josiah Winans, and stepson Mario "Skeeter" Winans are in the music business. Mario is a producer and R&B singer.
