The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork.
Hanging Lake straddles the international border between the United States and Canada. Most of the lake is located in North Cascades National Park, Washington, [2] but the northern section of the lake as well as the drainage are in Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park, British Columbia. Hanging Lake is less than 1 mi (1.6 km) ENE of Middle Peak.
Hanging Rock State Park offers over 48 miles (77 km) of trails where visitors can hike to its numerous peaks and waterfalls. The park has a 73-site tent and trailer campground (minus R/V hookups) and 10 vacation cabins for overnight accommodations. The lake and bathhouse, open from Memorial Day – Labor Day, offers swimming and boat rentals.
Dudley Lake was originally named Hanging Lake, and was renamed in honor of Dudley Hayden, an early park ranger. Access to the lake involves bushwhacking up into Snowshoe Canyon and is apparently easier if one passes the main stream draining from the lake and instead ascends from Moran Creek from the northwest.
