Benson is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2020 census , the population of the city was 5,355. It was founded as a rail terminal for the area, and located approximately 45 miles (72 km) east-southeast of the city of Tucson .

The population grew from 300 in 1880 to 1,200 in 1910. The buildings in Benson which were related to the railroad were the station, the Wells Fargo express office. Directly north of the station were housing for railroad personnel, and a hotel. In 1901 the Arizona Southeastern Railroad Company rerouted its traffic, bypassing Benson.
State Route 80 (SR 80) is a 120.20-mile (193.44-kilometre) long, roughly arc-shaped highway lying in southeastern Arizona.Starting in downtown Benson, the highway serves as the main route through the towns of St. David, Tombstone, Bisbee and Douglas before terminating at the New Mexico state line, becoming New Mexico State Road 80 (NM 80).
He named the area Benson after William B. Benson, a California judge who his friend and who was involved in mining operations in Arizona, California, Idaho and Mexico. The town continued to grow with the arrival of Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880. By 1894, Benson had become a major transportation hub with three major railroads. [2] [3] [4]
