Absaroka National Forest is a U.S. national forest in the U.S. state of Montana, established by the United States General Land Office on September 4, 1902, as the Absaroka Forest Reserve with a total area of 1,311,600 acres (5,308 km 2).
Emigrant Peak el. 10,926 feet (3,330 m) is a prominent mountain peak on the western edge of the Absaroka Range near Emigrant, Montana. [3] The peak is flanked by Emigrant Gulch on the north and Sixmile Creek on the south with the Gallatin National Forest and lies just outside the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.
The majority of the Absaroka Mountains are contained within the forest, with the highest peak being Francs Peak at 13,158 ft (4,011 m). [72] The peaks of the Absaroka are basaltic in origin, having been the result of volcanic activity estimated to have occurred 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch. [72]
The wilderness spans the Montana-Wyoming border on Gallatin, Custer and Shoshone National Forests and is composed of 944,000 acres (3,820 km 2). [5] The elevation ranges from 0 to 11,000 feet (3,400 m); the maximum elevation is at the Beartooth Plateau, located high in the Beartooth Mountains.
The Absaroka Range is a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The range stretches about 150 mi (240 km) across the Montana – Wyoming border, and 75 mi (120 km) at its widest, forming the eastern boundary of Yellowstone National Park along Paradise Valley , and the western side of the Bighorn Basin .
Mount Cowen is the largest peak near the valley, at 11,212 feet (3,417 m) in elevation. It is located in the southern portion of the valley on the eastern side of the river within the Absaroka mountain range. The valley is winter range for elk, specifically The Paradise Valley Herd and The Northern Herd. [2]
The Beartooth Mountains are located in south central Montana and northwest Wyoming, U.S. and are part of the 944,000 acres (382,000 ha) Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, within Custer, Gallatin and Shoshone National Forests. The Beartooths are the location of Granite Peak, which at 12,807 feet (3,904 m) is the highest point in the state of Montana.
