Antennas on Mount Wilson, covered in ice after heavy snowfall The first television antenna on Mount Wilson was erected in 1947 for pioneer station KTLA channel 5. At about the same time, the first FM station broadcast from Mount Wilson, which was the old KFI-FM on 105.9 FM (signed off in 1950).
In September 1997, Governor Wilson signed into law S.B. 623 (Jack O'Connell) providing for the financing and support of the transition of the site for use as a university campus. The state legislature and CSU's board of trustees provided funds to begin the conversion of the facility from a state hospital into a college campus.
The antenna is 50 feet (15 m) in length with a radiating aperture of 20 by 20 feet (6.1 by 6.1 m) and is constructed of aluminum. The antenna's elevation wheel, which surrounds the midsection of the horn, is 30 feet (9.1 m) in diameter and supports the structure's weight using rollers mounted on a base frame.
