In 1996, the Alexander Dawson Foundation decided to open a school in the Las Vegas Valley, the Foundation's home for more than 30 years.Located on a 33-acre (13 ha) campus in Summerlin, the Alexander Dawson Foundation spent $58 million for the land, the school facilities, the interest expenses on the construction bonds, and in shortfall budget support during the school's early years.
The original Las Vegas High School opened in 1905 with a tent in the city. The school made a new campus in 1930 that opened in 1931. After 62 years A new campus was made in 1992 that opened in 1993. Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson made a major gift in November 2006, for The Adelson School in Summerlin, which grew from 145 students to 600 students today.
