China Unicom (then known as Chinese: 中国联合通信有限公司; pinyin: Zhōngguó liánhé tōngxìn yǒuxiàn gōngsī) was founded as a state-owned enterprise in 1994 [4] by the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Electronics and the Ministry of Electric Power Industry; [5] the establishment was approved by the State Council in December 1993.
In 2015, China Telecom formed a joint venture China Tower with fellow state-owned telecommunication companies China Mobile and China Unicom. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] China Tower, which was the largest telecommunications tower group by revenue, became a separate listed company in 2018. [ 12 ]
The FCC previously barred approvals of new telecommunications equipment from China's Huawei Technologies and ZTE and other companies saying they pose "an unacceptable risk" to U.S. national security.
The telecommunications industry in China [note 1] is dominated by three state-run businesses: China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile.
