Gillingham (/ ˈ dʒ ɪ l ɪ ŋ əm / ⓘ JIL-ing-əm) is a town in Kent, England, which forms a conurbation with neighbouring Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Rainham. It is the largest town in the borough of Medway and in 2020 had a population of 108,785.
1950–1983: The Municipal Borough of Gillingham. 1983–1997: The Borough of Gillingham, and the Borough of Swale ward of Hartlip and Upchurch. 1997–2010: The Borough of Gillingham. The constituency was based around the towns of Gillingham and Rainham, which at that time were in Kent.

Historically, Rainham was a separate village. In 1921 the civil parish had a population of 4335. [2] On 1 April 1929 the parish was abolished and merged with Gillingham [3] and became part of the Municipal Borough of Gillingham, which was originally created in 1903 and was grouped into the latter's built-up area in analysis of the 2011 census by the Office for National Statistics.
