Stillwater became the state’s first school district just two years later. From the first one-room schoolhouse, Stillwater Area Public Schools has grown to serve more than 8,300 students in 7 elementary schools (PreK-5), two middle schools (grades 6-8), one high school (grades 9-12), and an alternative learning center for secondary students.

It serves as the primary high school for the Stillwater Area Public School District (834), the oldest public school district in Minnesota. The current campus was built in 1993 thanks to a 28 million dollar bond that was approved by the citizens of District 834. [3] The previous location is now Stillwater Middle School. (SMS).

Cottonwood Community Center, east side. It was named Cottonwood because there was an abundance of cottonwood from which the center was constructed, using hand-cut wood. The building belongs to the School District of Stillwater but the community residents do maintenance and repair. The land belongs to a corporation of community residents. [1] [2]

Later, as the necessary opportunity of higher education for women became apparent, the College of Saint Teresa was created. After Saint Mary's became co-ed in 1969, [49] Saint Teresa closed down in 1988, and its facilities are now used, owned, and/or operated by Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, Winona State University, and Cotter High School.
