Lapu-Lapu, officially the City of Lapu-Lapu (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Lapu-Lapu; Filipino: Lungsod ng Lapu-Lapu), is a highly urbanized city in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 497,604 people. [2] It was formerly known as Opon, the city being renamed to its present name in 1961.

Lapulapu [2] [3] [4] (fl. 1521) or Lapu-Lapu, whose name was first recorded as Çilapulapu, [5] was a datu (chief) of Mactan, an island now part of the Philippines.Lapulapu is known for the 1521 Battle of Mactan, where he and his men defeated Spanish forces led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his native allies Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula.

Two years after Lapu-Lapu was converted into a highly urbanized city in 2007, it was also granted separate congressional representation by virtue of Republic Act No. 9726, approved on October 22, 2009. The law separated the city from Cebu's sixth district to form its own congressional district [2] after the 2010 elections.
