The MMRDA was created on 26 January 1975 under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 1974 Government of Maharashtra. The agency is responsible for planning and coordination of development activities in the Region.
The Mumbai Metro master plan was revised by the MMRDA in 2012, increasing the total length of the proposed network to 160.90 km (99.98 mi). [23] In June 2015, two new lines were proposed. A line from Andheri West to Dahisar West, and a line from BKC to Mankhurd. [24] The following table shows the updated master plan unveiled by the MMRDA:
In November 2021, the MMRDA decided to construct the depot for Line 5 at Kasheli in Thane, instead of the original plan to build it at Kongaon MIDC, [13] after local residents opposed the plan. [14] The agency invited tenders for the construction of the depot on 20 October 2022. [ 15 ]
[40] [41] In August 2020, the Bombay High Court granted the MMRDA permission to carry out construction in a mangrove buffer zone. [42] Survey work on the land for a depot at Mogharpada began in January 2022. [43] The MMRDA stated that 37% of total work on Lines 4 and 4A had been completed by June 2022.
The MMRC insisted that the depot should be built at Aarey, but proposed a new design which would allow the depot to be construct on 25 hectares of land as compared to the 33 hectares required by the old design. [122] [123] [124] The new design will reduce the number of trees to be cut by 1,000. [125]
A 38.24 km (23.76 mi) long Colaba–Bandra–Charkop line was proposed as Line 2 in the original Mumbai Metro masterplan unveiled by the MMRDA in 2004. A 13.37 km (8.31 mi) long Bandra-Kurla–Mankhurd line and a 7.5 km (4.7 mi) line from Charkop to Dahisar were proposed as Line 3 and Line 4, respectively, in the same plan.
