Greencastle was founded in 1783 by John Allison from the Barkdoll House. The town was named after Greencastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. [6] It was originally composed of 246 lots. By 1790 there were about 60 houses in Greencastle, homes to approximately 400 people.
Since the first years after Greencastle was platted in the early nineteenth century, the land included in the district has been the center of commerce and government for the area. At its center is the Putnam County Courthouse: the current courthouse, built in 1905, is the fourth building to occupy the site.

Greencastle Township is one of thirteen townships in Putnam County, Indiana. As of the 2020 census, its population was 12,554 (down from 13,136 at 2010 [3]) and it contained 5,002 housing units. [4] This township contains the county seat of Greencastle and is home to DePauw University, a liberal arts college of 2,300 students.
The district encompasses 79 contributing buildings in a predominantly residential section of Greencastle. The district developed between about 1826 and 1961 and includes notable examples of Federal , Greek Revival , Italianate , Stick Style , Prairie School , and Bungalow / American Craftsman -style architecture.
