The Mack NM 6-ton 6x6 truck, officially "Prime Mover Cargo truck ", was Mack's first military 6x6. It debuted as a prime mover in 1940, and was used for towing AA guns, and ammunition. Gun crews rode in its canvas covered bed. The NM's enclosed cab came from the commercial L-model. Many NM's were used by the British as recovery vehicles.
Mack's design, influenced by their WWII era NO (7 + 1 ⁄ 2-ton, 6x6 truck), was chosen. Designed as an entire family of trucks, only the semi-tractor and cargo/prime mover were built. 392 M123 were built between 1955 and 1957 and 552 M125 were built between 1957 and 1958.

The Mack NO 7 + 1 ⁄ 2-ton 6x6 truck was a heavy 6x6 cargo truck designed in the 1940s by the American manufacturer Mack Trucks. It was used by the U.S. Army as an artillery tractor for heavy artillery during and after World War II. The official U.S. Army designation was: Truck, 7 1/2 ton, 6x6, Prime Mover. The Sherpa Carrier is a 2 to 4-ton (1,814 to 3,629 kg) 4x4 armored cargo truck. A turbocharged inline 4 diesel engine develops 215 hp (160 kW) at 2300 rpm and 590 lbf⋅ft (800 N⋅m) of torque at 1200 - 1700 rpm. It is also offered as a 4-door personnel carrier, an open roof model, and a lightweight 105mm howitzer carrier.
A bow and canvas top was fitted, so the truck could be disguised as a common cargo truck. Early trucks had a hard cab and a front-mounted pintle hitch, later trucks had an open cab and a 25,000 lb (11,000 kg) front winch. A 2,000 US gal (7,600 L) gallon trailer could be towed.
