Dorothy Parker (née Rothschild; August 22, 1893 – June 7, 1967) was an American poet and writer of fiction, plays and screenplays based in New York; she was known for her caustic wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles.
Lipton was 19 when he wrote the poem that was adapted into the lyrics for the 1963 song "Puff, the Magic Dragon", performed by Peter, Paul and Mary. His inspiration was a 1936 Ogden Nash poem, "The Tale of Custard the Dragon". "Pirates and dragons, back then, were common interests in stories for boys", Lipton said.
The tune was used by Versatec, a computer printer company, in the promotional LP Push the Magic Button for the song of the same name. [ 42 ] American fabulist Robert Coover wrote about the later lives of Puff and Jackie Paper in "Sir John Paper Returns to Honah-Lee", the first story in his collection A Child Again (McSweeney's Books, 2005).
The poem has an ironic tone, as the fierce-looking dragon is weak and scared - unlike threatening storybook dragons. Suddenly, a pirate holding pistols breaks into the house. Panic-stricken, everyone flees except Custard, who chases the pirate and devours him - proving himself the bravest of all. The others now feel obliged to him.
