Dick's Sporting Goods were formerly Kaufmann's, Gimbels, and Boscov's). The mall features more than 134 specialty stores. The mall also houses a food court and several professional offices. Located across the street from Macy's is the South Hills Village light rail station. This terminal opened for revenue service in July 1985.
In January 2002, Boscov's purchased the Strawbridge's store, originally a Wanamaker's until 1995 and later Hecht's until 1996, at Berkshire Mall; the Boscov's store at Berkshire Mall opened in August 2002. The interior of the mall closed on July 1, 2015, with Sears and Boscov's remaining open. In addition to expanding the mall, The Rouse Company improved US 30 Bus. and PA 100 near the mall at a cost of $3 million. [22] Boscov's, Sears, and the new food court opened in 1999. [23] Construction concluded in May 2000 with the opening of JCPenney and 48 new stores; a grand reopening was held to commemorate this.
Boscov's opened in 1977, prior to the mall. [ 2 ] [ 11 ] Susquehanna Valley Mall opened on September 26, 1978 with 400,000 sq. ft. of space and three anchors including Bon-Ton and Boscov's. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 12 ] J. C. Penney became an anchor 10 months after the mall opened. [ 2 ]
The mall opened with anchors Boscov's, McCrory, and Woolco. [4] [14] Gee Bee opened at the mall in 1983 and was later replaced by Value City in 1993. [15] [16] [17] Boscov's outside tent collapsed due to inclement weather in July 1986, with only light injuries occurring. [18] In 1995, the Boscov's store was heavily reconstructed. [19]
The Boscov's store at Lebanon Valley Mall was the first Boscov's location to be opened outside of Berks County. [ 5 ] The Lebanon Valley Mall Company, a real estate development group owned by parent company Boscov's, [ 2 ] oversaw construction of this mall on U.S. Route 422 on the west side of town.
