Dudh Koshi (दुधकोशी नदी, Milk-Koshi River) is a river in eastern Nepal.It is the highest river in terms of elevation. [1] Dudh Koshi originates from the glacier lakes at the height of 5,100 meters above sea level and meets Sapta Koshi at the altitude of 1,245 meters.
The Kosi River catchment covers six geological and climatic belts varying in altitude from above 8,000 m (26,000 ft) to 95 m (312 ft) comprising the Tibetan plateau, the Himalayas, the Himalayan mid-hill belt, the Mahabharat Range, the Siwalik Hills and the Terai. The Dudh-Koshi sub-basin alone consists of 36 glaciers and 296 glacier lakes. [13]

Sagarmatha National Park contains the upper catchment areas of the Dudh Kosi and Bhotekoshi rivers and the Gokyo Lakes. It ranges in elevation from 2,845 m (9,334 ft) at Monjo to the top of Mount Everest at 8,848 m (29,029 ft). Other peaks above 6,000 m (20,000 ft) are Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Thamserku, Nuptse, Amadablam and Pumori.
It lies in the Dudh Kosi river valley just north of Lukla and south of Monjo, at an altitude of 2,610 m. [1] [2] [3] It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Phakding has a population of 550 locals, mostly Sherpa and Tamang. All of these people belong to Tibetan Buddhism and pray in a small Gompa at the centre of the village. [4]
