The Dorothy H. Turkel House is a private residence located at 2760 West 7 Mile Road in north-central Detroit, Michigan, within the Palmer Woods neighborhood. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1956. [1] The Dorothy H. Turkel House is the only Wright-designed building within the city limits of Detroit. [1]
The land that this historic district sits on, like the adjacent Palmer Park and nearby Palmer Woods Historic District, was once the estate of Thomas W. Palmer, a wealthy Detroiter and one-time US Senator. [3] Palmer had intended to develop this area into a subdivision, but died in 1913 before bringing the idea to fruition.
Issac was a general railway supply manufacturer, but retired to invest in real estate. He quickly constructed a commercial building at the corner of Milwaukee and Woodward. In 1904, he hired Detroit architects Raseman & Fisher to design a small apartment building, then known as the Ray Apartments.
