Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Kilimanjaro in southeast Arusha Region, Tanzania. At a height of 4,562.13 metres (14,968 ft), [ 1 ] [ 4 ] it is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day, [ 5 ] and is the fifth-highest of the highest mountain peaks of Africa , dependent on definition.
Mount Meru is the second highest peak in Tanzania after Mount Kilimanjaro, which is just 60 km away and forms a backdrop to views from the park to the east. Arusha National Park lies on a 300-kilometre axis of Africa's most famous national parks, running from Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in the west to Kilimanjaro National Park in the east.
Meru District Council has a total population of 268,144 persons according to the Population and Housing Census of 2012. There are 131,264 men (49%) and 136,880 women (51%) among them. Meru District Council is predicted to have a population of 306,352 in 2017, with 149,968 (49%) males and 156,384 (51%) females.
Lakes are alkaline formed from the volcanic debris created when Mount Meru blew its top 250,000 years ago. [4] As the lakes are alkaline, animals do not drink from their waters, [1] but you can spot zebras and birds on their banks. [4] Lakes are the highlights of the Eastern section of Arusha National Park, [4] covering the forest of Mount Meru.

Meru now reside not just on the slopes of Mount Meru, but also in the valley at its base. Such communities are quickly transformed into tiny towns. Madji ja Chai, Leguruku, Ngare Nanyuki, Tengeru, and Usa River are a few examples. Tanzanian Meru can also be found in Arusha, Moshi, and Karatu. They work in agriculture and handicrafts (pottery).
