Anti-collision lights, also called beacon lights or strobe lights, are a set of lights required on every aircraft to improve visibility to others, as well as collision avoidance measures by warning other pilots. [1] Historically they have used incandescent light bulbs, but recently LED lamps have been used.
A high-intensity white strobe is used on structures that are taller than 700 feet (210 meters). These lights provide the highest visibility both day and night. Unlike a medium strobe, a high-intensity strobe does not provide 360° coverage; this requires the use of at least 3 high strobes at each level.
Originally intended for use as an aerodrome beacon, it was also widely used in marine lighthouses. Depending on the type of bulb installed, the beam could be seen for 18 to 26 nautical miles (33 to 48 km). The unit consists of a 25-inch aluminum housing with a parabolic reflector. An electric motor and gearbox drives the optical unit's rotation.
An airway beacon (US) or aerial lighthouse (UK and Europe) was a rotating light assembly mounted atop a tower. These were once used extensively in the United States for visual navigation by airplane pilots along a specified airway corridor. In Europe, they were used to guide aircraft with lighted beacons at night. [1] [2]
The most basic radio-navigational aid used in aviation is the non-directional beacon or NDB. It is a simple low- and medium-frequency transmitter used to locate airway intersections and airports and to conduct instrument approaches, with the use of a radio direction finder located on the aircraft.
