Waipā District Council (Māori: Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Waipa) [citation needed] is the territorial authority for the Waipā District of New Zealand. [ 1 ] The council consists of 14 elected members: the mayor of Waipā , Susan O'Regan , and 13 ward councillors.

The District was formed from Waipa County Council and its town boroughs in 1989. [5] The county boundaries have varied since five ridings were formed in Waipa county in 1876: Newcastle, Hamilton, Mangapiko North and South, [6] Rangiaowhia, [7] and Pukekura. [8] In 1902, it covered 282 sq mi (730 km 2) and had an additional riding, Tuhikaramea. [9]

It is the council seat of the Waipa District and serves as a service town for the farming communities which surround it. Te Awamutu is located some 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Hamilton on State Highway 3 , one of the two main routes south from Auckland and Hamilton.

Maungatautari is a rural community in Waipa District, Waikato Region, New Zealand. It is located between Maungatautari Mountain and Lake Karapiro on the Waikato River. Horohora township is to its north west. Pukeatua township is on the southern flank of the volcano overlooked by a south eastern peak called Te Akatarere.
