The Saab JAS 39 Gripen (IPA: [ˈɡrǐːpɛn] pronunciation ⓘ; English: The Griffin) [Nb 1] [3] is a light single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace and defence company Saab AB.
Reaktionsmotor 12 (RM12) is a low-bypass afterburning turbofan jet engine developed for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter. A version of the General Electric F404, the RM12 was produced by Volvo Aero (now GKN Aerospace Engine Systems). The last of the 254 engines was produced on 24 May 2011, at which time it had reached 160,000 flight hours without ...
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen's RM12 engine is a derivative of the General Electric F404. Svenska Flygmotor also designed the B42, a horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine, intended for the SAAB Safir. However, SAAB decided to use engines from de Havilland and Lycoming instead. In the end the B42 came to power the Infanterikanonvagn 103 assault gun.
A Saab JAS 39 Gripen, 39–102, crashed on the central Stockholm island of Långholmen, near the Västerbron bridge, during a slow speed manoeuver during a display over the Stockholm Water Festival. Lars Rådeström, the same pilot as in the 1989 incident, ejected safely. Despite large crowds of onlookers, only one person on the ground was injured.
An 80–93 kN (8,200–9,500 kgf; 18,000–21,000 lbf) thrust variant for single-engine light combat aircraft. [5]: 36 Proposed for an improved JAS-39 Gripen C military aircraft. [7] The M88-3 would have a new low pressure compressor (LPC) with a new variable stator vane stage and an increased mass flow of 73.4 kg/s (162 lb/s). [8] M88-4
Produced for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen Demonstrator. Slightly modified for use in a single engine Gripen, instead of a twin-engine aircraft like the F/A-18. With it, the Gripen Demonstrator reached Mach 1.2 in supercruise (without afterburner). [21] F414BJ Proposed version for the Dassault Falcon SSBJ.
The engine, which was derived from the Pratt & Whitney F100 that powered the F-16, was the only aspect of the aircraft that Eine acknowledged to have created a dependency upon the US. While carrying eight 750lb bombs the Lavi possessed a combat radius of 250 nmi; an alternative armament of 2,000 lb bombs enabled a 650 nmi combat radius. [ 9 ]
The air force operates a multitude of different aircraft platforms, with JAS 39 Gripen C/D being the main airframe. The air force also operates C130H and Saab 340 in a transport role along with other aircraft types for other capabilities and missions.
