In 1916 the California Shipbuilding Company built a few submarines in the Craig Shipbuilding Company yard in Long Beach. There is no relationship other than the name of the company. The Calship shipyard was created at Terminal Island in Los Angeles, California, United States as part of America's massive shipbuilding effort of World War II. W. A.
Roosevelt Base Terminal Island shipyard was founded in September 1942 as a ship repair facility. Construction started in 1939. Roosevelt Base also was the administrative and 40 acre recreational center for the Naval facilities on Terminal Island. Roosevelt Base Terminal Island was renamed Naval Station Long Beach on 15 November 1946
The island was originally called Isla Raza de Buena Gente [2] and later Rattlesnake Island. [3] It was renamed Terminal Island in 1891. [2]In 1909, the newly reincorporated Southern California Edison Company decided to build a new steam station to provide reserve capacity and emergency power for the entire Edison system and to enable Edison to shut down some of its small, obsolete steam plants.
The name of this facility was changed to Terminal Island Naval Shipyard on 30 November 1945. [2] On 15 November 1946, the adjoining Naval Station Long Beach was established. [ 7 ] The shipyard was renamed Long Beach Naval Shipyard (NSY) in March 1948.
Harbor Boat Building Company built Adjutant-class minesweepers, an auxiliary motor minesweepers for the United States Navy and other counties in the 1950s. The Adjutant class had a displacement of 330 long tons (340 t) light, 390 long tons (400 t) full load, a length of 138 ft (42 m), a beam of 27 ft (8.2 m) and a draft of 9 ft (2.7 m).
The shipyard is the only one in the Port of Los Angeles now operating and able to work on ships of all sizes with its 100 employees. The shipyard is at 1046 South Seaside Ave, Terminal Island, with 2.35 acres of land and 5.35 acres of waterways. The shipyard also runs a marina, Al Larson Marina. [1] [2] [3]
