After closing its doors in the 1960s, the site was renovated in 1986 and was re-opened as a bed and breakfast. LaVyrle Spencer was inspired to writer her best-selling novel Bitter Sweet, centered on an innkeeper in Door County, Wisconsin, after staying at the bed and breakfast during its re-opening week in 1986.
The house was used as a single-family home until 1983, when it was refurbished as a bed and breakfast, known at that time as the "Governor's Inn." The bed and breakfast has been operated under a number of different innkeepers, and as of 2017 is operated as "A Captain's Quarters Inn." [2]
