The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky-producing areas of Scotland. [1] Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4 million litres of spirit. [2]
The distillery saw further damage with a serious explosion in 1903. Then, in 1922, a fire in Warehouse Number One caused the loss of 200,000 imperial gallons (910,000 L) of whisky. Another fire in 1962 afforded the opportunity for expansion and a further re-build in 1982 extended the still hall to five wash stills and five spirit stills.

Bladnoch distillery is a Lowland single malt Scotch whisky distillery located at Bladnoch, near Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland. The distillery is situated on the banks of the River Bladnoch. It is one of six remaining Lowland distilleries, and is the most southerly whisky distillery in Scotland.
The site for the distillery was chosen for its access to the available clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs. [ 5 ] Set in mountain scenery, Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland with a visitors centre at 1,154 ft (352 m) above sea level.
Highland distilleries were taxed based upon the size of their still; Lowland distilleries were taxed per gallon in the wash. [11] This led to outrage from Lowland distillers over their comparably high duty rates. [12] Today the term Lowland is a "protected locality" for Scotch Whisky distilling under UK Government legislation. [13]
