The Tuckaseegee ultimately flows as a tributary into the Little Tennessee River below the lake. The name Tuckasegee may be an anglicization or transliteration of the Cherokee word daksiyi —[takhšiyi] in the local Cherokee variety, meaning 'Turtle Place.'
The Island Park was long accessible by a swinging, wooden footbridge across the Tuckasegee River from the center of the Bryson City business district.
