The newspaper took its current name in 1943 after the merger of the Shawnee Evening Star and Shawnee Morning News. [1] The paper was formerly owned by Stauffer Communications, which was acquired by Morris Communications in 1994. [2] Morris sold the paper, along with thirteen others, to GateHouse Media in 2007.

Benjamin Harjo, Jr. was an enrolled citizen of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and a descended of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. His ancestry was half-Seminole and half-Shawnee. Harjo's father was the late Benjamin Harjo Sr., a full-blood Seminole. Harjo's mother, Viola Harjo, was from Byng, Oklahoma.

In 1907 Oklahoma was admitted as a state and 8,024 people voted that the county seat be moved to Shawnee while 5,027 wanted it to remain in Tecumseh. The case was appealed and the higher courts decided bribery might have figured into the election since Shawnee had offered use of property in Woodland Park as a site for the county court house.
