Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the United States. It is on the Southern California coast in San Diego County and is bordered by Oceanside to the south, San Clemente in Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the northeast, and Fallbrook to the east.
Its functions are implementing policies, developing regional strategies and plans, and prioritizing resources. It also provides services, direction, and oversight through assigned U.S. Marine Corps Installations to support the Operating Forces, tenant commands, and activities—all to keep the Marine Corps ready to be deployed.

The closure of MCAS Tustin and MCAS El Toro were a result of Base Realignment and Closure legislation which saw MCAS Camp Pendleton expand its facilities again to support three additional helicopter squadrons.
