Mare Island (Spanish: Isla de la Yegua) is a peninsula in the United States in the city of Vallejo, California, about 23 miles (37 km) northeast of San Francisco.The Napa River forms its eastern side as it enters the Carquinez Strait juncture with the east side of San Pablo Bay.
Vallejo circa 1852–53, when it served as the capital city of California and seat of the Californian government. Founded in 1854, Mare Island was the first naval base on the West Coast. In 1851, Vallejo was declared to become the official California State Capitol, with the new government prepared to meet for the first time the following year.
