The Volmer VJ-23 Swingwing is an American high-wing, single-seat, foot launched glider that was designed by Irv Culver and built by Volmer Jensen and supplied as plans by his company Volmer Aircraft for amateur construction. Kits were also available from DSK Aircraft. [1] [2]
Designer John Dyke said his inspiration for the aircraft came from Alexander Lippisch's delta designs, specifically the LP-6 glider and later the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger. [clarification needed] The double delta layout of the Saab 35 Draken was incorporated into the design. A lifting body fuselage was incorporated after tests. [3]
The HP-14 is a Richard Schreder-designed all-metal glider aircraft that was offered as a kit for homebuilding during the 1960s and 1970s. [1] It was originally developed by retrofitting improved wings to the fuselage and tail of the HP-13, and first flew in 1966. [2] Schreder won the 1966 US national soaring championship in the prototype HP-14. [3]
The response by several companies produced designs for five larger gliders. One of these designs was the XCG-13 by Waco Aircraft Company of Troy, Ohio . The XCG-13 contract was for a 30-place design with an 8,000 lb (3,600 kg) useful load capacity to fly 174 mph (280 km/h) at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,700 m) altitude.
