The Ottoman period of Albania during the fifteenth century is traditionally said to have had a negative impact on Albanian art and so the influences of Renaissance were extinguished. This influence was absorbed and reinterpreted with an extensive construction of mosques that opened a new section in Albanian art, that of Islamic art . [ 19 ]

The fund of the new gallery, up to this time, counted 340 artworks and its archives counted 240 registered artists. From this moment onwards the Gallery of Arts functions as the only and most important national institution of exhibiting, conserving, studying, restoring, publishing, documenting and archiving the works of art in Albania.
The encyclopedia is the first of its kind in Albania, an ambitious project which will eventually be published in six to eight volumes. The publication is a product of the Center of Studies of Art, part of the Albanian Academy of Sciences. The encyclopedia has a board of 10 people, including some of the most prominent scholars in their fields.
The museum has over 7,000 art and cultural items, mainly icons, stone, wooden, metal and textile works, representing various moments in Albania's iconography development.
