Jarvis Collegiate was founded as a private school in 1797. In 1807 the government of Ontario, then known as the British colony of Upper Canada, took over the school and incorporated it in a network of eight new, public grammar schools (secondary schools), one for each of the eight districts of Upper Canada.

Jarvis returned to Vancouver in 1949 and became a drawing and painting instructor at the Vancouver School of Art in 1951, in 1961 becoming head of the department. [1] He remained there for 36 years. He is known for his lyrical abstractions, and especially for his Encounter and Rain Forest series of the 1960s and 1970s. [ 2 ]
