The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) is a federally managed forest contained within the White Mountains in the northeastern United States. It was established in 1918 as a result of the Weeks Act of 1911; [ 3 ] federal acquisition of land had already begun in 1914. [ 4 ]
White Mountain is in Custer County, Idaho, at [ 1 ] [ a ] It is named after the bright white rock on the north and west sides of the mountain, although the summit is of gray-brown rock. It is the highest peak in the Salmon River Mountains , in the southeast of that range, with an elevation of 10,442 feet (3,183 m).
The range is located within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) and partially within the Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds Wilderness.
