DVD regions. DVD region codes are a digital rights management technique introduced in 1997. [1] It is designed to allow rights holders to control the international distribution of a DVD release, including its content, release date, and price, all according to the appropriate region.

The Region 1 version has "Volume 1" in the title, as it was originally the intention to release Volume 2 at a later point in time. However, these plans were never executed. This has been fixed in the Region 2 and 4 release of the DVD, as Disc 1 was released separately as "Volume 1", and disc 2 was released separately as "Volume 2".
In the "Regional codes and countries" section, Region 0 is "Any region/region-free", while Region ALL has all 1-8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any location, on any player. What, then, is the practical difference between Region 0 and Region ALL?

The Region 1 DVDs include the standard format (4:3) version. The reason for this difference is that the Region 2 and 4 DVDs were released before the Region 1 DVDs, with less involvement from Mutant Enemy Productions. When the Region 1 DVDs were released, Joss Whedon decided that they should not have the widescreen version.
