The city has been historically dominated by major industrial activity and is home to U.S. Steel 's Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America.
Founded in 1906, Gary, Indiana was once a prosperous steel town, but then jobs left, crime skyrocketed, and half of its population fled. About 20 percent of the town's buildings are now completely abandoned.
