He is also a former college basketball player, serving on the teams for the United States Naval Academy and the University of Rhode Island. Cymbala's best-selling books include Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire; Fresh Faith; and Fresh Power.
On February 18, 1939, 1,400 people visited the church's exhibit at the opening day of the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. This exhibit was a visitors' center portraying a reduced-size Salt Lake Tabernacle. Eight more stakes were created in the 1930s, five in the 1940s, and 30 in the 1950s.
On April 6, 1869, George Careless was appointed as the choir's conductor and the Tabernacle Choir began to improve musically. Under Careless, the first large choir was assembled by adding smaller choral groups to the main Salt Lake Choir. This larger choir, just over 300, sang at the church's October 6–8, 1873 general conference.
