Over 1,000 years ago, during the Heian era, Sukuna was a powerful curse user, served by an underling named Uraume. At the beginning of the story, his power is sealed in 20 mummified fingers scattered throughout the world. Megumi Fushiguro traces one of his fingers to Sugisawa High School.
Yuji moves into the school and is mentored in Jujutsu personally by Satoru. He quickly strikes up a friendship with his fellow first-years, Megumi and Nobara Kugisaki. He dies during an altercation with a "Cursed Womb" at a detention facility, wherein Sukuna blackmailed Yuji by holding his heart hostage, but is later brought back to life by Sukuna.
