In medicine (oncology and other fields), performance status is an attempt to quantify cancer patients' general well-being and activities of daily life. This measure is used to determine whether they can receive chemotherapy , whether dose adjustment is necessary, and as a measure for the required intensity of palliative care .
There were four factors found to have independent prognostic relevance: age, performance status, LDH, and white blood cell count (WBC). [4] The point values are assigned as follows: 0 points: Age less than 50 years, ECOG performance status of 0–1, LDH less than 0.67 of the upper limit of normal, or WBC of less than 6,700 cells/mcl

For metastatic renal cell carcinoma, factors which may present a poor prognosis include a low Karnofsky performance-status score (a standard way of measuring functional impairment in patients with cancer), a low haemoglobin level, a high level of serum lactate dehydrogenase, and a high corrected level of serum calcium.
When I discovered the existence of the Karnofsky scoring, and that this scale is very widely used, after reading the criteria for the classification (as described for example in this article, or in any of the numerous websites found with Google with typing "Karnofsky"), I was VERY surprised about the vagueness and the arbitrary of this scale ...

Manchester score is an indicator of prognosis in small cell lung cancer. [1] [2] It is calculated from a number of physical and biochemical markers. A patient with small cell lung cancer scores one point for each of the following: [citation needed] - Serum lactate dehydrogenase exceeds the upper limit of the reference range.
