Sugawara no Michizane (菅原 道真/菅原 道眞, August 1, 845 – March 26, 903) was a scholar, poet, and politician of the Heian period of Japan. He is regarded as an excellent poet, particularly in waka and kanshi poetry, and is today revered in Shinto as the god of learning, Tenman-Tenjin ( 天満天神 , often shortened to Tenjin ) .
The Sugawara clan (菅原氏, Sugawara-uji) was a Japanese aristocratic family claiming descent from Ame-no-hohi. Founded in 781, they served the Imperial Court as scholars and government officials since the clan's foundation until the early modern period when the clan divided into six branches.
The inclusion of Sugawara no Michizane in the narrative was Akutami's tribute to their late editor. In 2017, Gege Akutami suffered writer's block in regards to their manga, having lost the motivation they had when reading My Hero Academia and Hinomaru Sumo.
