Moura is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Banana in Central Queensland, Australia. [2] [3] It services the surrounding coal mining and rural activities.It is situated approximately 65 kilometres (40 mi) west of Biloela on the Dawson Highway, 186 kilometres (116 mi) west of the port city of Gladstone, and 171 kilometres (106 mi) south west of Rockhampton.
The Moura railway line is a railway in central Queensland, connecting several coal mines to the port of Gladstone. It connects the remnants of several lines that previously connected to Rockhampton , originally by a rack railway .
Mining in the area began in 1961 in what was known as the Moura Mine. The mine was the first to export a shipment of Queensland's coking coal to Japan. [2] It was also the first mine to introduce draglines into its operation in 1963. [3] The coal is exported by Gladstone to the Barney Point and R G Tanna coal terminals. [1]

In 1961 a new coal mine (now known as the Dawson mine) was opened south-east of the town of Moura. Initially coal was loaded at a siding at Kianga, 15 km south of Moura. In 1963 a 12 km line was built from Moura to the new mine. At that time the most powerful steam locomotive owned by QR known as the Beyer-Garratt could haul a 750-ton coal load.
Central Queensland includes the Bowen Basin which is rich in high quality coking coal, the Port of Gladstone produces 40% of the state's export earnings, the Fitzroy River is the second-largest river system in Australia and commands significant water resources such as Fairbairn Dam. Gladstone has a significant aluminium smelter.
The Dawson River rises at the eastern end of the Carnarvon Range in Boxvale State Forest and adjacent private lands. This is a rugged forested area of sandstone gorges in which the river is an ephemeral stream with some permanent, spring-fed waterholes.
