The project cost $38,000, which was paid by the city of Halifax. However, the hospital faced many challenges with its infrastructure and services, and remained largely unused until 1867, when it admitted its first patient. In 1887, the hospital was renamed again as the Victoria General Hospital, in honour of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
