Special Olympics World Games take place every two years and alternate between Summer and Winter Games, a schedule similar to the Olympics and Paralympics. Attracting as many as 350,000 volunteers and coaches, plus several thousands of athletes, these World Games can be the world's largest sporting event of the year.
Johnson, along with a small group of volunteers, founded California Special Olympics in 1969 by conducting a competition at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for 900 individuals with intellectual disabilities. Following the first California Games in 1969, Johnson became one of the original members of the board of directors.

Los Angeles has served as host of the Special Olympics on two occasions. Los Angeles first hosted the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1972. Los Angeles hosted the Special Olympics for a second time in 2015, which were held between July 24 to August 2, 2015.
The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games were held from June 14 to 21 in New Jersey. [4] The Opening Ceremony was held at Prudential Center in Newark. [5] [6] Competition was held at venues throughout Mercer County including The College of New Jersey in the Trenton suburb of Ewing, [7] Rider University, Princeton University and Mercer County Park.
