The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large dog breed originally bred in Southern Africa. [1] The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo , Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ), in 1922, and approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927.
The ridge on the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a distinct characteristic of the breed. The Ridgeback Club's code of ethics states that "ridgeless puppies shall be culled". The programme traces the Kennel Club's history to the eugenics movement, on which it says purebred dog breeding is based (see Purebred dog § Eugenics and history).
