The High Court of Judicature at Madras is a High Court located in Chennai, India. It has appellate jurisdiction over the state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry . It is one of the oldest high courts of India along with Calcutta High Court in Kolkata [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] and Bombay High Court in Mumbai .
The Calcutta High Court is the oldest high court in the country, brought into existence on 14 May 1862. [2] High courts that handle numerous cases of a particular region have permanent benches established there. Benches are also present in states which come under the jurisdiction of a court outside its territorial limits.

Muthuswamy commenced his legal career immediately after graduation. He was appointed a judge of the Court of Small Causes in 1871. [1] [2] He was made Fellow of Madras University the subsequent year. [2] In 1877, the Madras Government took the controversial decision to appoint him as the first Indian judge of the High Court of Madras. [4] [5] [6]
Sundresh was elevated to the Madras High Court from the bar, on 31 March 2009. On 29 March 2011, his appointment was made permanent. Sundresh had participated in the inaugural function of the new building for Mediation and Conciliation, Lok Adalat and Arbitration Center at the Madras High Court premises, in the presence of the other administrative judges and judicial officers. A project to place the new institution as near the High Court as possible led to the selection of a site for erecting a structure to the west of the High Court building. The building structure of the Law College was designed by Mr. Henry Irwin , the Government Architect and the Law College moved into that building on 9 January 1899.
