Smith Mountain Dam is a concrete arch dam located on the Roanoke River in Virginia, creating Smith Mountain Lake. The dam was built by Appalachian Power (a division of American Electric Power ) between 1960 and 1963 for the purposes of pumped-storage hydroelectricity .

Gathright Dam is an earthen and rolled rock-fill embankment dam on the Jackson River 19 miles (31 km) north of Covington, Virginia. The dam is 257 feet (78 m) tall and 1,310 feet (400 m) long and has a controlled spillway within the structure's southern portion.
It is formed by the Occoquan Dam on the Occoquan River. Managed by the Fairfax County Water Authority, it provides an important water supply to surrounding settlements in northern Virginia, with an output of 17 million US gallons a day (64,000 m 3 /d) to 1.2 million people, including over half of the population of Prince William County. [1]
Smaller and lower than Smith Mountain Lake, Leesville Lake covers 3,270 acres (13.2 km 2) and contains 94,900 acre-feet (117,100,000 m 3) of water at full pond. The lake is 17 miles (27 km) long with around 110 miles (180 km) of shoreline.
The National Inventory of Dams defines any "major dam" as being 50 feet (15 m) tall with a storage capacity of at least 5,000 acre-feet (6,200,000 m 3), or of any height with a storage capacity of 25,000 acre-feet (31,000,000 m 3).
Since Lake Chesdin was built in the late 1960s, silt buildup on its bottom has reduced the amount of water the lake can hold by 1.5 billion gallons. [3] In addition, a run-of-river hydroelectric facility is located at the dam, which provides power generation whenever the flow over the spillway exceeds 150 cfs, or 1 1 ⁄ 4 -inch flow depth.
