Standard Gauge, also known as wide gauge, was an early model railway and toy train rail gauge, introduced in the United States in 1906 by Lionel Corporation. [1] As it was a toy standard, rather than a scale modeling standard, the actual scale of Standard Gauge locomotives and rolling stock varied.

In late 2006, Lionel began delivering an updated remake of its largest steam locomotive, the famous 4-8-4 Northern, as well as a gray Union Pacific Northern with smoke deflectors (elephant ears); both new versions have digital sounds. Due in late 2006 or early 2007 is a new high-detail Pacific (4-6-2) with both TMCC capability and RailSounds.

The gauge is 5 in (127 mm) in Europe, but 4 + 3 ⁄ 4 in (121 mm) in US and Canada. For standard gauge prototypes at 5 inch, the correct scale is 1 1 ⁄ 16 inch per foot or approximately 1:11.3. Alternatively 1.1/8 inch per foot is adopted, only Australia for ease of conversion. allowing a scale of 3/32 inch per full size inch.
OO gauge is one of several 4 mm-scale standards (4 mm to 1 ft (304.8 mm), or 1:76.2), and the only one to be marketed by major manufacturers. The OO track gauge of 16.5 mm (0.65 in) (same as the 1:87 HO scale) corresponds to prototypical gauge of 4 ft 1 + 1 ⁄ 2 in, rather than 4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in standard gauge. [2]
