    A lot ofthe names were contracted (built buy one company with another name on them). But every kid knew names like Keen-Kutter, Primble, New York Knife, Queen (the old one), etc. Pocket knives have been built in this country for over 200 years. picking a company to represent that history shouldn't be limited to just those still in existance.

The knife gained a very high reputation as a working knife. The reputation spread to America where they became very popular.

    "By far the highest quality" is a subjective matter. I like the laguioles made by Laguiole en Aubrac the best. Others will say Forge de Laguiole o.a. is the best. I think all these serious French factorys make a good product.

    Also from my other reading it seems the best designs for whittling are a whittling knife or stockman (both 3 blade with different points), so those are the ones I am looking at. My first one will probably be a whittling though, it seems like a good idea to buy one that was designed for the purpose I want to use the knife primarily for.

    And there is a large contingent of traditional pocket knife folk who crave non-stainless. My own opinion on the lesser focus on Buck traditional pocket knives is that Buck has only a few patterns they make in the US. IMO they best working knives available today due to their heat treat, unique blade profile, and overall robust design.

    Russell started producing the Barlow knife in 1876 and had some pocket knives that were well received at exhibitions prior to then. In fact, the current Dexter-Russell company is currently assisting me with some historical research on my own old knife.
